I always enjoy seeing new couples. Just the other day I ran into a friend from school who was with his new girlfriend. They said they had been dating for 3 months and things were going well. During our brief conversation she was leaning on his shoulder with a huge smile. As they walked away, I wondered if the sweet bliss that they displayed for each other was going to continue or how long it would continue. There are many factors that must be in place for a relationship to work. It's no secret that people experience heartache and pain when they find themselves in a relationship which consists of a bad environment. I think the first thing that couples must do about setting the tone for their relationship is be real with each other. Far too many times people will get together for all the wrong reasons only to find themselves miserable down the road. Be real about the fact that you're dating, you're just friends, or you're taking what you have serious because you invision marriage one day. Being real with each other will save you from being hurt down the road. I think the second thing you have to do is continue to work on creating an atmosphere that works for your relationship. If your relationship consists of dishonesty, lack of trust, and selfishness, then it's easy to suggest that you won't be together for long. I think what couples have to do is make sure that communication is in place, understanding is flowing, and the relationship has produced growth in each person. Who wants to be in a relationship that is at a stand still? I think the last thing that must be in place is a spiritual foundation. It is critical for two people to connect on a level beyond the physical. The question to ponder is, Does your relationship have more that just the physical? I think that when two people strive to work together, the environment of your relationship will be just fine.
